Frequently asked questions

Quick answers about how SageTutor works.

Is SageTutor free?

Yes, during the beta. Practice Test 1 works without an account, and a free account unlocks all the other tests. A paid Pro plan with extra features is planned for later; see Pricing.

Is this an official IELTS or SAT test? Are you affiliated with IELTS or College Board?

No. SageTutor is an independent practice service. It is not affiliated with, or endorsed by, the British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia or Cambridge University Press & Assessment, nor by College Board (SAT is a trademark of College Board). All our test material is original.

How are my bands estimated?

For Listening and Reading we convert your number of correct answers to a band using published conversion tables. Writing and Speaking use the four official marking criteria. Every score is an estimate. The details are on How scoring works.

Where are my results stored?

If you are not signed in, your results are saved only in this browser (local storage); clearing your browser data removes them. When you sign in, your results are saved to your account so you can see them on any device, and results already in the browser are copied across. See our Privacy Policy.

Should I choose Academic or General Training?

It depends on why you are taking IELTS. Academic is usually for university study or professional registration; General Training is usually for work, training or migration. Check with the organisation you are applying to. Listening and Speaking are the same for both; only Reading and Writing differ.

Which test should I start with?

Start with Practice Test 1. It is free and needs no account. Take one full skill under timed conditions to get a starting band, then use the other tests to practise the skills where you lost the most marks.

Can I use my phone?

Yes, everything works on a phone. However, the real computer-delivered test is taken on a desktop screen with a keyboard, so for full timed tests, especially Reading and Writing, a computer gives you the most realistic practice.

The Listening audio is not playing. What can I do?

Check that your device is not muted and that the volume is up, then reload the page. Some browsers block audio until you tap or click on the page, so press the play or start button again. If you use an ad or script blocker, try turning it off for this site, or try another browser. If it still does not work, email us and tell us your browser and device.

I think an answer is wrong. How do I report it?

Email hello@sage-tutor.com with the test number, the skill and the question number. We check every report and correct confirmed mistakes.

Can I get a refund?

There is nothing to refund at the moment: SageTutor is free during the beta and we do not take payments.
