Checked on each university's and government's own website on November 2, 2026. Requirements change and are higher for some courses (often Law, Medicine and Education): always confirm on the official page before you apply.

University guides and prospectuses

Most universities publish a free prospectus or guide for international students, with courses, entry requirements, costs and campus life. Pick a book to open it on the university's own website.

The covers are made by SageTutor; the guides belong to each university and open on its own website, so you always get the latest edition. Some universities send their guide after you fill in a short form.

You usually have to show English at CEFR B2 for a degree (B1 below degree level). For a degree your university can assess this itself, often with IELTS Academic, TOEFL iBT or PTE Academic; otherwise you need a Secure English Language Test (SELT) such as IELTS for UKVI or PTE Academic UKVI.

The US government sets no English test for the F-1 visa. Each university decides its own English requirement (often TOEFL iBT or IELTS) before it issues your Form I-20.

For the Student visa (subclass 500) the government asks for at least IELTS Academic 6.0, PTE Academic 47 or TOEFL iBT 67 (lower if you add English classes before your course), from a test taken at a test centre within the last 2 years. Some applicants are exempt, and your university usually asks for more (often IELTS 6.5).
